HOWARD HODGKIN TO HAVE MAJOR SHOW IN LONDON

The first major exhibition of new paintings by Howard Hodgkin in London since 1993 will open at the Anthony d'Offay Gallery on Friday 12 November 1999. The show will include twenty-one new works and all the gallery spaces will be used.

A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition with an essay by the poet, James Fenton.

Howard Hodgkin is one of Britain's leading artists whose work has attracted international acclaim and new young audiences. He was born in London in 1932 and he lived in the United States from 1940-43. He represented Britain at the XLI Venice Biennale in 1984. He has been a Trustee of both the Tate Gallery (1970-76) and National Gallery (1978-85). He was awarded the Turner Prize in 1985 and was knighted in 1992. His work is in the collection of museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Sao Paulo Museum, the National Gallery of Art Washington and the Tate Gallery. His recent international shows include Howard Hodgkin Paintings: 1975-1995 organised by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas and also shown at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Hayward Gallery, London.

Howard Hodgkin recently created one of the largest painted designs in the world for the exterior of the new Imax Cinema in Waterloo. He is also among a group of leading artists who have been asked to design a poster to celebrate the re-opening of the Royal Opera House in London.
