  Carl Andre

New Wood Work

20 October - 17 November 1995

We are very pleased to announce the opening of an exhibition of new work by Carl Andre.

These new sculptures use over 300 units of hard walnut timber, each cut to 50 x 10 x 2 inches, arranged in giant arcs across the gallery floor. The curving shapes created in these works call to mind the patterns of duckboards on board a ship.

These works represent a new formal departure for the artist. His earlier series of wood sculpture called Elements relied upon a strong architectural character. That rigidity has given way to a more lyrical quality; and in this new body of work, it is the gallery walls which create the boundaries for these curved forms.

A major museum retrospective of Carl Andre's work will open in Germany in February 1996. Wooden and metal pieces of a large scale will be exhibited in the Kunstmuseum in Wolfsburg, whilst the small scale works will be on view simultaneously at the Museums Haus Esters and Haus Lange in neighbouring Krefeld. This is the first comprehensive exhibition of Carl Andre's work in over a decade.
