HOWARD
HODGKIN TO HAVE MAJOR SHOW IN LONDON
The
first major exhibition of new paintings by Howard Hodgkin in London
since 1993 will open at the Anthony d'Offay Gallery on Friday 12
November 1999. The show will include twenty-one new works and all
the gallery spaces will be used.
A fully
illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition with an essay
by the poet, James Fenton.
Howard
Hodgkin is one of Britain's leading artists whose work has attracted
international acclaim and new
young audiences. He was born in London in 1932 and he lived in the
United States from 1940-43. He represented Britain at the XLI Venice
Biennale in 1984. He has been a Trustee of both the Tate Gallery
(1970-76) and National Gallery (1978-85). He was awarded the Turner
Prize in 1985 and was knighted in 1992. His work is in the collection
of museums and galleries throughout the world, including the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, New York, the Sao Paulo Museum, the National Gallery
of Art Washington and the Tate Gallery. His recent international
shows include Howard Hodgkin Paintings: 1975-1995 organised by the
Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas and also shown at
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and Hayward Gallery, London.
Howard
Hodgkin recently created one of the largest painted designs in the
world for the exterior of the new Imax Cinema in Waterloo. He is
also among a group of leading artists who have been asked to design
a poster to celebrate the re-opening of the Royal Opera House in
London.
